Mimi Stein Granek is of counsel whose practice focuses on bankruptcy law and representation of financial institutions and debtors in a wide variety of restructuring and insolvency matters.  Mimi focuses her practice on the transactional and litigation aspects of bankruptcy, workouts and reorganizations. Mimi has more than two decades of experience representing secured and unsecured lenders, creditors, bankruptcy trustees and debtors in workouts and bankruptcy proceedings

She handles all aspects of Chapter 7 and 11 cases, from pre-bankruptcy planning to confirmation hearings and post-confirmation matters, including adversary litigation. Additionally, she has significant experience in business reorganizations, real estate workouts and out of court restructuring. Mimi works closely with the other members of Gutnicki's corporate and litigation groups to provide clients with full and complete legal services for their transactional and litigation needs. She has represented many buyers of corporate assets, including health care companies, from bankrupt or dissolving entities.

Mimi's experience with bankruptcy cases dates back to her clerkship with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Illinois in 1996. Mimi currently serves as a Chapter 7 panel trustee for this same court.

Mimi is currently serving as the Chapter 7 trustee for the Estate of Johnson Publishing Company. In 2019, she successful sold the company’s archive of historical pictures, negatives and videos used in connection with Ebony and Jet magazines chronicling African American life in America from the 1940’s to 2016. She continues to work with the buyer to ensure that the collection is preserved and made available for the public.

Mimi co-authored "Bankruptcy Considerations in Foreclosure," Mortgage Foreclosure, published by the Illinois Institute of Continuing Legal Education (2010 and 2013).

Mimi is an alum of Chicago-Kent College of Law and frequently speaks at Chicago-Kent Alumni Association events. Mimi is well known in the bankruptcy community and is often asked to speak on bankruptcy topics.
